BERGDATA AG (Bonn, Germany) and hyperstone electronics have entered into a broad agreement to cooperate in the development and marketing of embedded biometric identification (ID) systems.
BERGDATA AG, a manufacturer of biometric ID systems, will contribute its entire biometric-related know-how and experience to the cooperation while hyperstone electronics, a manufacturer of embedded RISC/DSP processors, will design an embedded biometric ID system with BERGDATA AG fingerprint sensor technology using the hyperstone RISC/DSP processor.
Franz Veit, President and CEO of BERGDATA AG stated: "After having looked intensively for a processor, which suits our next generation of fingerprint scanners, we are convinced that hyperstone's products are the best choice for us. The advantages, which arise from this cooperation, are enormous for our company. Nobody knows a CPU better than the inventor of that CPU! By signing this agreement, BERGDATA has been able to take full advantage of hyperstone's capabilities in the area of biometric applications."
The goal of the cooperation is a universal, stand-alone embedded biometric ID system. Unlike other biometric systems, this intelligent scanner performs scanning, analyzing, and identification of the fingerprint without the need of a PC. The complete system will reside on PCB slightly larger than a matchbox. Various potential applications are: auto anti-theft devices, time-keeping and attendance systems, access control portals, networking systems, keyboards access modules, or even - in a miniaturized form - cell phone access control circuits. The Bergdata/hyperstone biometric system also has an enormous potential in Internet related E-commerce applications where verification of identity and authentication of signatures is critical.
The Bergdata/hyperstone biometric system will be available in May 1999. The companies will also have a prototype of an auto anti-theft system ready in the same month.
Dr. Matthias Steck, Director of marketing and sales at hyperstone, says: "Our RISC/DSP processors are very applicable to low-cost multimedia products as well as to Internet devices. Additionally, many customers are requesting total solutions for biometric ID systems, such as for recognizing fingerprints. We are convinced that BERGDATA has a head start in biometric systems over the competition. Through the cooperation with BERGDATA with their special know-how, we are able to jointly provide total solutions for various market segments. Hence, the customer benefits from drastically reduced development times as well as from lower production costs."
BERGDATA AG was founded with the goal of providing solutions in the area of communication and network security. In order to meet the increasing demand for security in electronics systems, the company established a new division specifically for addressing the needs of this market segment. The company's staff members mainly consist of mathematicians, computer scientists and physicians with specific knowledge about scientific image processing and pattern recognition algorithms.
Hyperstone electronics is a fab-less microprocessor design company with offices in Konstanz, Germany and Cupertino, California. Applications of hyperstone's combined RISC/DSP processors are portable electronic consumer products, Internet
Hardware, Flash memory cards, and similar products. The uniqueness of hyperstone's processors is the integration of DSP functionality into a 32-bit RISC architecture resulting in a compact high performance architecture with very low power consumption.
