Solid-State Drives (SSDs) have taken industrial markets by storm in recent years due to the durable and reliable nature of their design. With no mechanical components, and different reliability grades of the flash, SSDs are mechanically robust and scalable for many applications, significantly reducing field failure rates compared to Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). SSDs originally adopted the 2.5- and 1.8 inch-formats from their predecessors, HDDs, mainly based on the IDE/PATA or SATA interfaces, thereby enabling a simple switch from HDD to SSD. Meanwhile, the acronym SSD is used to reference many different form factors or interface standards, including modules such as mSATA, M.2 or eMMC.  

Micro SSD (aka µSSD) was specified by the SATA-IO and uses a JEDEC standard form factor. It defines the electrical pin-out of a BGA for a SATA3 interface. Like an eMMC or UFS, the package is soldered directly onto the motherboard, removing the need for connectors.
